Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Child support payments

My ex-girlfriend and i were together for 5 mos. During the relationship she asked if i would sign to be her youngest daughter's father since she haas no clue who the real father is to this little girl. Now its been a year since we have broken up and she's threatening me to take me to child support services and make me pay. Can New York state make me pay even though i am not this girl's father and the ex and i have never been married?

Re: Child support payments

Whether the Court will adjudge you to be the "putative" or "legal" father depends upon the terms and circumstances re the document/s you signed.

GOOD LUCK,

Re: Child support payments

This is a difficult problem. I am unclear on the definition of 'sign to be her father'.

My answer depends on this. If you did not sign documents legally adopting the child or documents adopting financial responsibility for the child, then you are not responsible for the future financial needs of the child.

Merely signing the child's school report card or signing for medical purposes will not be sufficient.
