Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Child Support

My son, not in the same state as we are, and DIL are separated. My DIL and 2 kids are living with us. My son has other urgent legal issues going on and my DIL is suing him for support for his son. My DIL currently receives support from the county in the form of Food Stamps and a small cash amount for her two children.

Can the free rent, childcare, car/gas, clothing, heat, etc. we provide be considered support? And if so, what would have to be done legally to make above applicable? Should we have Power of Attorney for our son to act in his interest in this case?

Thank you.
