Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Court order of protection

I may have to obtain an order of protection against my nephew for harrassment and threatening. How do I go about this if I decide I have to go this way? There are no children or anything of that nature involved in this matter. He is just a drug addict, looking for money, not getting it from us, and now threatening our lives. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Re: Court order of protection

Go to the "intake room" at the New York County Family Court. They will be able to help you.

Re: Court order of protection

In addition to what Messrs. Markowitz and Hanlon have said, ask about the income limits for assigned counsel in your area. If you qualify, you may be able to have the assistance of an attorney without cost to you.

Re: Court order of protection

You need only go to the Family Court in the

county where you reside and fill out a

domestic violence petition against your

relative The rest will be handled by the

court, although you will end up speaking to

a judge at least two times.
