how do i get court ordered guardianship of my friends children?

A friend of mine wishes for me and my partner to obtain legal guardianship of her two young children in the event that something should make her unable to care for them. Her family is absolutely nuts and she does not want them to have control over her children if she is not around. Where does this process begin and how does it work? Any info you can offer would be a great help to us. Thank you!

She should make a will which states her wishes, while it's not a guarantee it's an indication of her desires and can be taken into account should anything happen to her. I would be happy to help her with this as we draft these kind of provisions regularly.
