Legal Question in Family Law in New York

custody

I am a Case Manager from New York. I am employed with a social services agency. The question that I have is I have a client. Her daughter is deceased however she had two children at the time of her death. My client had temporary custody of the children however she does not have the paperwork regarding the temporary custody she received from family court. Her grandchildren presently reside with their great-grandmother because my client lost her apt. The great-grandmother is getting older and may not be able to care for the children. What can my client do in order to obtain full custody of the children?

Re: custody

You don't mention the father of the children or how old the children are? If she simply "lost" the papers, she contacts the court clerk for copies.

Grandparents can petition the court for full custody, if they are fit. You say she lost her apt. Was that due to nonpaymt?eviction? A general answer is, to file for full permanent custody and go from there.
