Legal Question in Family Law in New York

custody

My children's father is seeking out legal custody of our 3 children. They have lived with him for 2 years. they lived with both of us for 7 years and then with just myself for 1 year. We have no custody order at this time. I wish to have joint custody as i do not want to give up any rights. I would like to know what my rights are and what course of action i should take. We have a court date for Aug 28th, 2007.

You should not waste anytime and get an attorney to protect you parental rights. A divorce is not something to be handled by your self. It is not inexpensive, but in the long run it will be worth every penny you spend on the lawyer now.
