we have custody of our grandchildren. the mother has stated that she is seeking a lawyer to get custody back. what does she have to do to get custody back of children. they have lived with us for almost three years.

You need a lawyer. She might be able to get them back b/c the courts like to keep biological PARENT(S) and kids together. On the other hand, the court may see it that in the best interests of the kids ("BIK"), they stay where they are. Generally, parents do have a greater legal right to children, as a result she may be successful but the family courts are generally also quite good at local at the totality of circumstances.
