Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Dating & custody

My boyfriend has just begun a custody battle for his 4yr old daughter. We have not been dating for a very long time but it has long term potential. We agreed from the start of our relationship that I should not be introduced into his daughters life until we have known each other longer and are sure it is serious. I have no contact with his daughter, and we do not live together. I have a steady job, come from an excellent home, have no criminal record, and have professionally worked with children in the past. Can our dating hurt his chances of winning custody? Should I step out of his life until this is over?

The fact that he is dating you will have no impact whatsoever, and may even be beneficial.

Re: Dating & custody

Custody determinations are a complex and fact-intensive area of law. I need to hear the whole story before giving any feedback but, as Mr. Venezia notes, dating relationships can be used to an advantage. I have very relevant and current experience in this area and would be happy to discuss this with your boyfriend in detail. My number is 212-367-9167. I do not charge a fee for the initial consultation.
