why would my lawyer as me to sign a sworn statement of barriers to remarriage.

It's a standard requirement for a divorce when a the marriage was by a religious ceremony. Most religions do not require a removal of barriers, but some do - and rather than try to pick through the various religious requirements the law merely requires everyone to execute the document if they were married in a religious ceremony.
