Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Divorce rights

Hello, my husband added my into his credit card account to help me start a credit history. I never charged anything to the card because I don't even have one. At the time I thought he added me as a co-signer but in fact he added me as co-owner of the account. Now, we're separating and about to start the divorce proccess . The account is over the limit and the credit card company don't want to take me off the account and they're holding me liable for the debt as well. How can I get them to take me off the account because that debt it's really affecting my credit score. What can I do?
