Depending on where you are, some "legal aid"-type offices will help with divorces IF there are no contested issues. Contact your county's bar association - they maintain referral lists & you may be able to find an attorney to help you through them. Feel free to call an attorney's office & make an appointment for a consultation - *most* attorneys offer initial consultations for free or a very nominal fee. Although many people seem to think that - as a potential customer - you can't say "thanks, no thanks", you can; put otherwise, it is absolutely permissible to shop for an attorney the same way you might shop for a car, or a pair of shoes. Divorces aren't Necessarily expensive - but, even a non-contested, "consented-to" divorce will still cost around $400.00 in court filing fees. If you are without assets beyond your SSI, you may qualify to proceed as a "poor person", in which case those fees will be waived.
