what is a good first step to take how do you become legally seperated and what exactly does that mean?

The first step is to retain an attorney to draft a Separation Agreement.

After the Agreement is signed by both spouses, and notarized, you are legally separated.

A legal separation contemplates either an agreement or a judgment. In order to obtain a divorce, you may be able to skip the separation.
