Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I am going through a divorce. It is going to trial after 2 years. My husband, who has always spent and wasted money on businesses wants me to pay his business debt and he wants a portion of my enhanced earnings as a physical therapist. 25 years ago I went to school and paid for it although we were married at the time, he is looking for 40000 of my future earnings. Everyone thinks he will get about that much in court--NY state. Why is this allowed-there is nothing equitable or fair about this. He makes more money than I do.
