Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Divorced or Not?

I was previously married and I then appeared on the tv show Divorce Court. My question now is am I legally divorced? I have tried to contact the show numerous times with no response from them by either telephone or email. I am now engaged and will be married in August of 2002 so I need to find out as soon as possible. Thank you.

Well, if there was no judgement of divorce signed, then you are not divorced. You should check the court file from when you appeared in court. If Divorce Court will not return your calls, you may consider having an attorney contact them. Sometimes getting a call from an attorney will get the ball rolling.

In NY, only a Judge of the Supreme Court can grant a divorce.

Unless you have a valid Judgment of Divorce, assume you are still married.

If necessary, you can bring a divorce action now and should be able to have it completeted before the summer, if you act now.
