Legal Question in Family Law in New York
divorcing wife wants alamony
my father in law is getting divorced, his wife is delaying the lawyers working on the divorce. She has changed her mind numerous times after property agreements were made. She wants alamony, and half of everything, he is a business owner so she wants to sell the business and wants half. He agrees to give everything, house, business,ect..., the lawyer says it will cost about 10,000$ in fees for him and the same for her which he will have to pay. is there anything he can do to quickly complete the divorce if he is willing to give everything except the alamony?

Re: divorcing wife wants alamony
If there is no agreement on an issue, such as maintenance (alimony), it will have to be litigated. Litigation is unavoidably time-consuming and expensive. I don't know how a lawyer could properly predict that the costs would be limited to $10G for each side, unless the lawyers had agreed to take the assignment for a flat fee (an unusual arrangement in matrimonial litigation). The retainer agreements are filed with the parties' statements of net worth, by the way. I would need more details to properly assess the case.
