Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Domestic Partnership Implications

I am considering filing for domestic partnership with my girlfriend so that she can receive health insurance benefits though my job. What are the implications that I should consider before deciding to file as her domestic partner? How can I protect myself in the event that the relationship ends? Would I be putting myself in a very vulnerable financial position by filing for domestic partnerhip at this time?

Thanks very much.

Re: Domestic Partnership Implications

Needless to say, a domestic partnership is not a marriage. Simply stated, a domestic partnership is an arrangment that offers each partner certain rights (generally not obligations). Such rights are generally provided by the domestic partnership statute, such as the right to health care benefits. Those rights are generally extinguished when the partnership ends.

It is common for domestic partners to share in onwership of assets. If you are concerned about a break-up, you should be careful if you purchase real property, or maintain joint financial accounts.
