Legal Question in Family Law in New York

formerly on DSS - re child support question

I was on DSS at the time my child was born. 4 months later I was off DSS. They petitioned the court for paternity/child support from my ex-boyfriend. I don't need anything from the father of the baby, though he gives me diapers, formula, clothes and toys anyway. I don't want to go to court for child support. Since I am no longer with DSS, if I don't show up for court, won't the judge just dismiss the petition? Another question: I understand DSS wants their money back for the Cesarian delivery, but it sounds like they want the whole amount from him. I would think each of us should pay half. (By the way, we get along, we've just moved on.) Thanks.

Re: formerly on DSS - re child support question

Contact the DSS Agency person and ask them what they want and why they are proceeding, when you are no longer a Client.

Try not to give them too much info; and do not let them intimidate you. YOU want the info, in order to decide how to proceed.

GOOD LUCK,
