Legal Question in Family Law in New York

What is the most effective way to get a divorce?

I have been legally separated since August of 1990. I would like a divorce, but would like to keep the cost down. Is there a way to simply get a divorce, without all of the time, hassle and expense?

Since it is impossible to give you meaningful legal advise in a posting like this, I suggest you consult with an attorney.

There is no magic solution. You have not stated whether you have been separated pursuant to a written Separation Agreement or by order of a Court. If you simply have been living apart, you must start from the beginning. Your cost will depend upon the complexity of the case ie. kids, property, incomes. If you already have a fully-executed Separation Agreement the process can be quicker and thus somewhat cheaper since the financial terms and conditions have already been agreed to. Where there are children involved the Court can and will exercise control over the situation if it is not satisfied that the children are being properly taken care of.
