Engagement Ring Etiquette

If your daughter is engaged to be married and she dies, are her parents (beneficiaries) obligated to give the engagement ring back?

Re: Engagement Ring Etiquette

An engagment ring is a gift made in contemplation of marriage. It is a conditional gift- if the condition is not satisfied ( i.e the marriage), the ring must be returned.

Re: Engagement Ring Etiquette

I am sorry for your loss.

The legal question is an interesting one. I would argue it could go either way. You may invoke the legal doctrine of "impossibility" to defend your rights to the item. In addition, there are probate/estate questions. was the pending promise to marry a 'lien' on the ring for this purpose? Perhaps not.

As I said, it is an interestin legal problem in the abstract. In the real world, both you and the prospective groom have endured a shattering loss. Please strive to comfort each other rather than act out your pain in this painful controversy.

My best wishes.
