engagement ring legally required to return
the ring if the engagement is broken?

Generally, yes, you would have to return the engagement ring if the engagement is broken, regardless of whose fault it is. However, if the ring was given to you as a gift on your birthday, anniversary, or Christmas, you would have good argument to keep it.
