Engagement rings
Who is entitled to keep an engagement ring if the engagement is called off? We traded in a ring given to me for christmas and rather than exchange it he used the gift as part of the down payment of the engagement ring.. does that affect who gets the ring?

Re: Engagement rings
An engagement ring is a gift given in contemplation of a promise of marriage. There is, in the eyes of the law, a contract involved. If there is to be no marriage, he is likely entitled to the ring back. On the other hand, because you contributed to the cost with the prior ring that was an outright gift, you should be able to lay some claim to the value of the ring. I would suggest some negotiating to see what the two of you can come up with.
