Legal Question in Family Law in New York

can I escape?

I have been in a mentally abusive controlling relationship for 5 years. We have a child together and another on the way. We are not married but do own a house together. I am afraid to leave this relationship, as he has threatened to take my children from me and says that he will prove that I am unfit because I smoked during pregnancy, because his family has my child while I am at work(8hrs/day), he also believes he can prove that they are the primary caregivers, along with numerous other threats (to many to list). I do not wish to keep our children from him and would allow visitation as long as they are not being abused or controlled as I have been. Do I have the right to move out of the house with my children? I have wanted to leave him for years, but this fear has stopped me. I am afraid for my own as well as my childrens well being. I love my children more than this world, and I think that it is unfair to them to see him treat me or for him to treat them this way. He believes that he is a model citizen and that the court will grant him full custody. Please help.
