Legal Question in Family Law in New York

family law- child support never claimed

Dear sir/madam:

I am 37 years old. My parents were divorced when I was 18. My father never paid my mother child support for myself or my two other siblings (at that time they were ages 12 and 15). He did not pay alimony. Upon my mothers divorce (which she paid for as my father lefts us one year previous) her divorce lawyer advised that the judgement woudl be that of $1.00 eper year that he woudl pay in the case that she or us children wanted to claim anything from him.

My father is very off financially. And until a year ago we were in ''ok'' terms. At that time my sister was to be wed and we asked him to assist with the financing of the wedding. He declined giving excuses that since he was not to walk her down the aisle then he woudl not pay for the wedding.

Since then, I am now engaged and to be wed in July. The question that I have is can I sue my father for funding my wedding.

This is not a spiteful request. He has been absent from us our entire lives and still brags to people that he has 3 children. If that is the case, can we not claim anything from that?

Please advise if there is a case with thsi and if so should I seek legal couseling.

Thank you kindly

Eleni Kydes

Re: family law- child support never claimed

There is no obligation for your father to provide any financial support to your or any other child over the age of 21. Regardless if he paid or didn't pay support for you when you were a minor.
