Legal Question in Family Law in New York
My fiance and I just found out that his ex never paid her lawyer to finish filing the divorce papers. we were told it would take 6-8 weeks from the day they signed them but she never paid and he enver filed. we are to be married in 3 weeks. we called a lawyer and he said he could get them to us in a week but he wans 750 dollars. i was wondering if this is legal and if you have any clue why he would be charging so much

Hiring a lawyer to complete a divorce is certainly legal. Whether the lawyer can complete the paperwork and obtain a judge's signature on an expedited basis or not depends largely on the county in which the case is situated and on the workload of the matrimonial judge(s) in that county, as well as on the current status of the case.
I agree with attorney Browde's answer, and I must also add that most competent matrimonial attorneys charge an hourly fee of about $350.00.Therefore the fee quote of $750.00 for the services you described is far below the industry standard and seems not only reasonable but downright inexpensive.
