Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Help Me Please

My fiance just recieved court appointed letters saying that he is the father of a child that he didn't even know existed. the child is maybe three I'm not sure there has been no contact with mother or child in over three years.My question is since he had no idea about this if this is his child can he sign over his rights for the child? it was a one night thing and there were plenty of guys involved. Please help me

He can sign over his legal rights but assuming he is actually the father, signing over rights absolves him of parental responsibility but not of child support.
