Legal Question in Family Law in New York
Just got the final decision in my divorce. No kids, wife makes $175,000/yr, I make $98,000/yr. Wife got house, all contents (including my desk), I have to pay $5,000 in her legal fees and $2,400/month for a year. My question is... is my judge on crack? And of course since my lovely ex dragged out the proceedings I have $20,000 of my own legal fees. Cannot afford to appeal especially since my lawyer is obviously incompetent and I cannot afford to lose and be stuck with another $5,000 or $10,000 in fees.
Not feeling particularly enamored with the legal profession at this point but I finally understand all the lawyer jokes.
1 Answer from Attorneys
In selecting a lawyer, people often choose the first one they find or the one with the flashiest presentation. Of course, this is a big mistake. Moreover, as you may guess, as with any profession, not all lawyer are created equal. Therefore, it is up to you to do you research to find the best attorney for your budget.
With that said, you didn't disclose where you are in New York. Your only option is to appeal within the time set forth by the law. You don't have forever to do so. If you don't want to appeal, Law Guru is the wrong site for you.
