Legal Question in Family Law in New York
How do I fire my lawyer?
My divorce attorney has had my divorce case since March of 2000. It does not involve children, property or assets. Both sides have signed opting out agreements. Nothing is left but to take it to a judge, tho my attorney does nothing, since March of this year when he said he had the last paperwork and would send it to the opposing attorney to file at court. He has not returned any of my calls since. And in January of 2001 I filed a complaint with the attorney grievance committee to which he fancy worded his way out of it. Divorce papers were served to me in Dec of 1998 with nothing financially to hold it up, and here I sit, still not divorced. How do I compose a letter to my attorney to fire him and then to let the opposing attorney know that I will represent myself?

You simply draft a letter to your attorney stating that as of whatever date, he is no longer employed as your attorney or authorized to a ct as such and you send a copy to the adversary's attorney.
Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can call my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation or in the alternative, I can be reached for on-phone low-cost legal consultation at 1-800-275-5336 x0233699.
