Legal Question in Family Law in New York

FOIA and Non -Identifying information

In 1986 I placed a daughter for private adoption. Because the atty. that handled the adoption for the adoptive parents is no longer practicing law due to disciplanry action taken against him, I have no clue who or where to contact for non-id info and or the final adoption decree with all identifying info whitened out. I don't even know if her adoption was finalized in my home town (where I signed my papers) or in NYC which is where the atty for the adoptive parents was located. Is this something I can accompish with the Freedom of Information Act of 1974 and if so who should I sent it to, along with a Waiver of Confidentiality to be added to a file where ever need be?

Thank you.

Re: FOIA and Non -Identifying information

As the natural mother who placed your child for adoption, you should be able to obtain confirmation or information re the court order for the adoption of your child, in any county or jurisdiction that the adoption and placement action was processed.

Legally, you are not in the equivalent position the adoptive child is, re the adoption or placement info, concerning non-disclosure or secrecy.

Good luck,
