Legal Question in Family Law in New York

foster care

If a child was placed with us through social services(for a ''respite'' weekend) and remains with us, can we apply for foster care services. We get no help from his family and social services told them the child could stay with us forever if they(the family) wanted him to. The problem is no one asked us for our opinion and he has been at our house for over 3 months. We are starting to struggle financially and when I asked Social services for ideas or input about foster care they tell me he is not eligible because he was not ''removed'' legally from the home. Excuse me but as far as Iam concerned he was abandoned. He is 15 and has no place to go. What are our options? Please help!

Re: foster care

True, if he was not removed and placed in your home by Social Services then he cant be considered a foster care child even if he was abandoned under the circumstances you descibed. You can apply for welfare if you are eligible or you can bring an action in family court for child support.
