Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My friend's ex wife and him are in the middle of a custody disagreement. I believe she has custody, but he has visitation rights. She wants to get their son a passport, but we believe she might abduct him. He refused to give consent for the passport, but was court ordered to sign the passport. If he refuses, he will go to jail. Is it legal to coerce him to sign away his rights?

The only other alternative he has is to file an appeal noting legal error.

Did he have an attorney at the original hearing? If not, this may have been an error on his part.
