Guardian ad-litem

Why would a court appoint a guardian ad-litem when an the mother (0nly living relative) was already appointed the minor childs guardian?

The purpose of a guardian ad litem is to represent the child's legal interest, especially where the judge feels the parents are at odds and may disagree on what's best for the child. As a practical matter, judges usually appoint guardians ad litem to help decide where the child should live.

In the court's view there apparently is some issue as to the child's best interests and whether they could be in some way inconsistent with those of the mother.
