Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Handling matters without going to court

I am a 19 yr. old single mother. I was just wondering if I can write up and agreement with my child's father regarding visitation and child support and have it be a valid legal contract. I understand it would be better to go to court for this, but I can't afford it and I just want to make sure that I can have a legal agreement with my son's father so he will pay child support and have his visits. Also, I want to know if we do write up an agreement would it be considered a valid legal document if later on I do have to take him to court?

A private form is ok and can be submitted to court for approval. Why not call the legal service office to be sure it is good or go to the family court and tell the clerk at intake that you guys have agreed to how to handle things and submit the form.

If necessary most county Bar Associations have mediation and reduced fee service committees to help people like you and your baby's father out. If not call Catholic Charities and speak to a volunteer lawyer with them.

It was mature of both of you to put the baby first and settle this amicably.

Good luck to you both and to your little one.
