Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My soon to be ex husband and his attorney are trying every little trick in the book. I have already been able to prove my husbands lying under oath in court. Now he has filed for divorce on the grounds cruel and inhumane treat, which is what I was going to file for but since he took off with 15K in the bank leaving me with nothing he was able to retain an attorney and I have not. My question is do I have to send in an aswer to an Order to Show Cause or just appear in court on the date stated? I have spoken with all the attorneys in my area and noone will even talk to me without a 3K retainer which the only way I could have gotten that was to sell my belongings but he has now made a motion for nothing to be sold till divorce is settled, but meanwhile he is selling everything he took which is all marital property.

You should to your local county courthouse and ask for papers to file for poor person's status, and get a court appointed attorney.

Contact the local Bar Association. Most if not all of the associations have a reduced fee or pro bono panel that assists people in your situation. Also call the New York State Bar Association.
