Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My husband and his ex-wife are still in court for custody of the kids. She has the children Tuesday, Wednesday and every other weekend for right now. My husband has been temporally granted residential joint custody. She had the children last night. My husband got a call from the children's school this morning stating they did not show up today. He has called his ex-wife and texted her; she has yet to respond. What can he do to make sure the children are safe? Does he need to contact the police?

The children should have legal representation. I would contact the law guardian.
