Husbands responsibility for debts of wife who abandoned marrage over five years

Wife left after 38 years of marrage five years ago and is now living in another state. She has her own assets and is living well. How can I avoid responsibility should she accumulate any debts, since she left me, and I do not wish a divorce.

File for a legal separation. In NY, these are rarely used, but would be appropriate in this case. It does not sever the marriage, but does allow for division of debt, and property.
