Legal Question in Family Law in New York

hypenated name

When my child was born in NYS I opted to give my son my last name. they told me i could not list his biological father on the birth certificate unless I used his last name. I regret no at least hyphenating my son's last name. How can i alter his birth certificate, if at all. what can be done?

Re: hypenated name

It is not that hard. GO to the family court house and speak to the clerk. As long as the father will acknowledge paternity you should have no problem adding his name to the certificate, otherwise you can keep your name as the last name and put the dad's name first then the hypen.

If there is a problem at the clerks office, see an attorney.

Good luck.
