Legal Question in Family Law in New York

''In-laws''

Are my ex-wife's family still considered my in-laws? I have remarried and want to know if they have any legal status in the eyes of the law.

Re: ''In-laws''

It is hard to answer your question without more information. As to you, your former in-laws have no status, unless you entered into some kind of contract with them.

If you have children with your former spouse, however, the former in-laws have legal status as to the children. They are still the grandparents, and can seek visitation.

I need more information. Legal status as to you? The answer would be no. They are no longer "in-law".

However, I feel there may be more to your question. They may have some legal status as to your children (if any). They may have some legal status as to any obligations owed to them under contract.

Mike.

Re: ''In-laws''

Your former in-laws retain the same "legal status" they had while your were married: generally, none.

It is bad enough having to go through a divorce with one's spouse. Imagine if we had to go through a separate divorce with our in-laws.

Re: ''In-laws''

They no longer have a legal status vis-a-vis

you

However, if you had children, they will

always be the children's grand parents, and

as such will always be involved.
