Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Joint Custody between unmarried parents

My ex-girlfriend and I had a verbal agreement for weekly child support for my son which I have been paying faithfully for 7 yrs. Now she wants to take me to court for all that she can get. I want to file for joint custody. Is joint custody very difficult to obtain or is it a normal course of action. I believe I have a more stable household than the mother.

Re: Joint Custody between unmarried parents

You may be entitled to joint custody, but that will not excuse you from the payment of child support.

I suggest you consult with an attorney to further explore your rights.
