Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Judgement Against Boyfriend/Fiance

My boyfriend/fiance who lives/works in NY state is getting ready to move in w/ me (to the state of MA) but has just gotten a judgement against him on past credit card debts. I have some savings from the sale of my folks house and want these savings to remain untouched. My question is this: can these collection agencies/those who have the judgement against him come looking for me if we eventually get married and would they have access to my money, in my name, etc.?

Re: Judgement Against Boyfriend/Fiance

Probably not, unless you use that money to purchase joint property like a home or automobile.

If you are interested in settling the judgment with the collection agency/attorney, often times they will settle for a small lump sum payment.

It may be a good idea for the two of you to draw up a prenuptial agreement. Whatever you do, it probably wouldn't hurt to consult with an attorney.
