Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Marriage law

I'm attending a study on the history of marriage in

different cultures, and I'm not able to find

materials nor legale references on the marriage

between blacks and whites in the US. As far as I

know (from novels and movies) there should have

been some law which declared not legal for a

black to marry a white; and if there was one

(perhaps only in some speficic State, I suppose),

there should have been also a new law or - better

- a decision on a case (maybe the Supreme Court

did?) which allowed this kind of marriage. Or was

it just a social disregard, not a legal prohibition? I

will be grateful to anybody who can provide me

specific information on this topic. Thanks in

advance

PS.: I had to mention one specific State (New

York), but the question is related to all US.
