Legal Question in Family Law in New York

marriage license problem

I am getting married in Sept and need a marriage license. My problem is that when I was very young, my mother remarried and gave me the name of my stepfather without ever changing it legally. All of my legal documents (SS#, passport, driver's license) are in my stepfather's name, but my birth certificate is in my father's name. Now they tell me I need to get a legal name change before I can get a marriage license. It seems ludicrous to change my name twice in three months and pay all the fees for a legal name I will never use. Is there anything I can do?

Re: marriage license problem

An application to the Court to legally change one's name under the Civil Rights law is a fairly easy process. If you want you can contact my office to discuss the cost of the application.
