Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I have been married for years now, but a year ago my husband abandoned me, at first i was able to call him, but he then he changed his number and address. I now have no way of contacting him or know where he even lives. We have no children either. How do i know if we are even divorced? or if we are still married? And if we are still married how can i divorce him if i cant contact him?? Please help me, so i can move on with my life.

If you do not know where your spouse lives, you need to use a process commonly referred to as a "divorce by publication". However, be aware that due to the extra filings and procedures involved, there are substantial extra costs, including motion preparation and filing, affidavits by a process server, and court-ordered advertising. This can get expensive. Unfortunately, if you cannot locate your spouse, this is the only way you can get divorced. For more info, see our law firm website at http://nycdivorcecenter.com. Steve is correct. However, before you go through all the legal issues, retain a private investigator to locate your husband.
