Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My mother in law has been divorced for quite some time... When she divorced her husband, they had a joint credit card that was left in both parties names. Over the years, the husband, and only the husband maxed out the credit card, to the sum of 28 thousand plus dollars. He has been unable to pay the charges, and the balence was given to a collection agency. My mother in law just found out that he had been using the card all this time, and her credit is now ruined and she is faced with having to pay off the balence in which her ex occured. Is there anything she can do???

Based on the limited information you provided, your mother-in-law should not be obligated to pay for debts that were incurred post divorce.

Your Mother in law is liable to the credit card company. She then can go after ex-husband for $$. But that will not help right now.

The credit card co can get a judgment and freeze her assets or lien her property or garnish her wage.
