Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I am a mother with sole custody of my daughter. My ex husband has taken me to court for a reduction in child support that he has rarely paid over the last 12 yrs.I have gone to court several times and the last 2 times I was not allowed in the court room. I told my lawyer before the last proceeding that I want to be present in the courtroom during my case. Do I have the right to be present? My ex lives in another state so he doesn't have to appear physically and he has never come only his court appointed attorney has.
