In most cases, the non-custodial parent still retains rights with respect to the child and one of the most fundamental rights is that of visitation. Therefore if you relocate without notice or consent of the non-custodial parent s/he can cause significant problems for you, including potentially, a petition for change of custody.

It depends on the agreement/order that grants custody to you and to what extent the relocation would affect the other parent's time with the child and involvment in their life. You should contact an attorney with all of the details as soon as possible. Relocating to another state can have serious consequences that you should know about in advance.
