Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I would like to obtain legal custody of my children (I'm pretty certain I'll get physical custody with reasonable visitation/access by the father). What is the typical procedure for this in NYC (I'm sure the father would be opposed to me having full legal)? Thank you.

You should go to the intake room at the Family Court and make application for custody.
