Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I paid $8,500 for my very simple divorce and felt like I was getting ripped off. We went to court in Sept and the divorce was finalized. Now my attorney is asking for an additional $2000 to complete paperwork. I asked her if I could do this on my own since I don't have more money and she said no. Am I being ripped off? Can I file this paperwork on my own to save money?

$10,500 for an uncontested divorce is steep. You may want to seek arbitration on the amount charged. You should either contact your attorney (by law must deliver arbitration materials) or the local bar association. Through the arbitration process the attorney must justify the amount charged.

As to your question about completing paperwork, it would depend on your specific situation. I do not have enough facts to make this determination.

Mike.
