Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Paying Child Support Directly to My Child

I would like to know if I need to go to court, and/or if I need to hire a lawyer to change my child support payments to go directly to my child. I have 2 children from a previous marriage, 21 & 19yrs. I am still paying the support amount for both children (even though the older child is 21). I would like to pay the support directly to the 19 yr old. She has one more yr of high school. She purchased her own car, pays her insurance, buys her own clothes. Her mom doesn't prepare meals. They live in a house given to her mom by her deceased spouse's parents. My daughter is responsible for herself. I would like my support to be given directly to her. It is currently being taken from my paycheck and sent to her mom. Can I get just the name changed without a big legal hassle, if I don't want to change the amount, or the automatic payment?

Re: Paying Child Support Directly to My Child

I'm sorry but you can't do this without legal hassle and mother's agreement. As a matter of fact, I think you are better off to insist upon the removal of the 21 year old and let the child support you do pay-go to mom, because this won't cost you any money dealing with the legal system.
