If a person is in a relationship (dating), and one party buys their girlfriend a gift (laptop computer) does the person receiving said gift have to give it back or return it if the relationship ends?

Gifts, not give in contemplation of marriage are gifts and not required to be returned. That being said, you need to be careful, many times it is claimed that the "gift" was really a loan or the money to purchase it was loaned to the person and they supposedly agreed to pay it back. Things like jewelry, clothing and personal items are easier to demonstrate as gifts and not loans. Things like computers (laptops or desktops) are more difficult.
