A POA is helpful when an individual is either disabled or unavailable. Of course, you have to trust that individual to make the right decisions.
The laws concerning the POA have changed in NY. It is scheduled to go into effect this Fall. Therefore, make sure the form acknowledges the new law.

I suggest that you apply for a guardiandship which will allow you to make financial and medical decisions regarding your spouse.
